On arriving at Corfu Airport, Spiros had organized a taxi to
transport us to the R/C Hotel. We had been shown the new site on our previous
visit in September 2004, when it was still a construction site. It takes approx
30 mins by taxi from the Airport to get there.
Upon arriving we were met by the familiar face of Katrina the
female Chef who remembered us and gave us a big hug. She then took us to the
bar and gave us a free Welcome drink. We then heard a familiar voices shouting
Hello from the Hotels Apartments, it was Clare & Mark whom we had met last
year, they were the first of many that we were about to meet from last years
visit. It was indeed like meeting up with family. We were then taken to our
apartment 13A which was in the 1st block on the 2nd
Floor. It had two balconies. Air Conditioning, Kettle with Coffee/Tea etc,
Fridge, TV, Double Bed, Bedroom Furniture and a nicely tiled bathroom with
shower. There is a lovely Swimming Pool which is
over looked from the Apartments and adjoining the bar, with dining area at rear.
At the lower part of the complex is a purpose built
Hangar/workshop
for all the aircraft etc and Accommodation above where Spiros, Rula, Nikko,
Elvira and all the staff live. And of course this is where the grassed runway
and helicopter flying area is situated.
Landscaping at present is still ongoing and will take a year or two to mature with
more flowers and greenery, but Rome was not built in a day but will be more
beautiful in time and the Hotel was only opened in May 2005.Next morning after our arrival we were raring to go, so we got up at 8am and went to
the dining room for Breakfast – dining times 8.30am to 10.30am so don’t be late
or you will have to grovel to Linda for your Breakfast. Breakfast being Cereal,
toast, jams, full cooked breakfast, yoghurt, eggs scrambled, boiled etc,
Coffee/Tea/Orange, just ask for what you want.
From Breakfast it was straight to the flying field and after speaking to the
Instructors Graham & Joe we sorted out an hour each for our flying lessons
for that day, as we are both Inexperienced plane flyers. Last year I nearly got
to fly Solo, and Martyn flew Heli’s which is his thing but this year he fancied
having a go at Planks!
Flying starts at 9am to 1.30am (ish) and the evening flying starts at 5pm to 8pm
(ish). Those that have not gone on day trips after the mornings flying normally
go to the bar and have lunch made by Linda, 11.30am to 4pm (Lunch times). At
which time you normally book your Dinner, ordering from the Specials Menu or
the normal Dinner Menu. THE FOOD IS
YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the Afternoon we would have a swim after Lunch and then back to
our room for a Siesta!
Ready for our evening flying.
After the evening everyone normally congregate around the bar for
drinks,
and on occasion Spiros will bring out his Roulette Table, allowing each
player a EURO each worth of tokens. He then keeps playing until he has won all
of your tokens back – smiling all the time!
Other evening entertainments include Scalextric Car Racing Races
in which all place approx 2 Euros in the pot for the winner. I got knocked out
first round; I never was much good on Scalextric especially after a drink.
Also they do a night flying display with a Heli & a Plane
which is excellent. They also have a Disc plane which they attach balloons to
and then when flying it try to shoot the balloons. There is never a dull moment
when Spiros is about!
Whilst at the Bar after the Evening Meal, this is when you book
your training slots with Instructors for the next day and also book any trips (extra
cost) you wish to go on the next day. E.g.: Corfu Town, Beach trips, Island
Tour with Lunch included, Boat trip with BBQ on beach etc. Most trips start at
11am except for the Boat Trip, so it is often possible to fly early in the
morning before setting off on a trip.
Martyn and I plan to return to the R/C Hotel in Aug/Sept 2006, we
never thought we would go anywhere more than once but this is such an enjoyable
holiday full of fun and good company.
Spiros treats you as an extended family
member, all staff are very friendly – a home from home.
Spiros also does Instructing down at the field, and when coming
into Land I can still hear his voice ringing in my ears saying “Parallel to the
Ground” and “to YOUR right Karen, to YOUR right”. But I am pleased to say I
managed to become solo in the second week of my stay flying a Magister and a
Ready 2.![]()
Spiros his family and staff are brilliant hosts and we recommend you visit this holiday, we too have never seen a bad write up or heard any bad comments and it is an experience you should not Miss!!!!
